A Crafty Little Place Color Challenge

Good Morning!  It's Tuesday and time for A Crafty Little Place Challenge.  This week we have a color challenge for you using these colors:

The DT got to use some really fun papers by Petal Pushers.  I got lucky enough to get the dotted papers...YEAH!  Love dots!

I decided to make my daughter a little gift box in honor of school starting very soon.  I was able to use one of  the newest releases from Claudia and Co ...School Time Lucy.  I made a matching bookmark to go inside this box that I plan to fill with some goodies for a girl starting Middle School.  

I decided to cut out the little pile of books separately and add them to the bookmark along with some punched out dots from my scraps of paper.  The letters are cut out from the Chicken Noodle Sizzix die and colored with my Copics.  I also colored that flower with Copics to match, as well as, the cream colored May Arts Ribbon.  See all the fun things you can do with Copics? You can find the directions for this box HERE.  I altered mine by making  a different handle.

A Little Help, A Little Info, A Little Crafting

I can't believe how long it's been since I last posted.  I have one more vacation and then life will resume to normal I think.  I do have a few cards to share with you today.  First though, I would like to ask a favor.  My friend, Priscilla, contacted me last week asking me to spread the word about a project she is working on.  She is hosting a drive to collect scrapbook supplies/stamps for a woman who lost everything to a tornado a few weeks ago.  Near Toledo, Ohio, several families were devastated to lose their homes to a tornado that came through in the night.  One family was killed.  Priscilla is someone that I tried to raise money for about a year ago. You can read about that HERE.  She has already organized a very successful garage sale to raise money to help pay for household items for these families.

This is part of her email to me:

I'm sure you heard that on June 5th/6th we had horrible tornadoes here nearby.  We actually didn't get any damage from the storm at our house but it hit hard in my hometown and completely destroyed many homes, leaving many with absolutely nothing!  So, I was asked to organize a fundraiser and of course, I was honored and jumped at the opportunity!  I decided to have a huge garage and bake sale and asked for people to donate their unwanted items so we could sell them at the sale.  We had over 100 families donate and made a little over $5500.  It was amazing!  Now, we have been contacting the families who were affected by the storms and asking them to compile a wish list of items that they need right now, as well as items they don't think their insurance is going to cover.  It's so awesome to be able to help, even if in just a small way.  (I'm thrilled to be able to "Pay It Forward" and do something for someone else like you did for me!)

The reason I am telling you all of this is because I wanted to ask for your help!  During my conversations with many of the families it was brought to my attention that one mother had a huge scrapbooking and stamping room dedicated and full of nothing but supplies...she was one of the families who lost everything.  Scrapbooking and stamping are close to my heart and I just couldn't walk away with that information and do nothing...so what I decided to do is contact everyone I know in the scrappin' and stampin' world and ask for help!  I am asking for people to donate any scrappin' or stampin' items that they have just laying around not being used or stamp sets that have been used are retired or have made their way to the bottom of the collection...only to be forgotten about.  Having said all that...would you be interested in helping me collect items to give to this mom?  Her name is Jackie and she has three young children.  Two girls, 4th and 6th grade and one boy age 4.  My goal is to deliver five huge boxes full of cardstock, stamps, adhesives, ribbons, brads, flowers, etc...to her and hopefully help put a smile on her face for the first time in a month.  Not only did she and her family lose everything they own but across the street her in-laws lost their home and everything they own too...in fact, her in-laws are still in the hospital.

I would also love to have help spreading the word!  Any help you can spare would be greatly appreciated!

Now on to the cards:

 This card is for several challenges.   The Color Throwdown is having a big celebration for their 100th Color Combo.  The colors:  Baja Breeze, Celery, Regal Rose and Red.  This card looks way better IRL.  I also used the Stamptacular Sunday Sketch this week.

This is another card I made for our neighbor boy.  He has been feeding our turtles while we are away.  This is no small task.  They eat a LOT for 2 babies.  He has to come over twice a day to keep them full.  I love this digi image from The DigiStamp Boutique.  I used one of Practicing Creativity's sketches this week.  I'm also entering this into the Hip To Be Square Crazy Challenge.  At Stamp Something they have a recipe challenge: 1 image, 1 DP and 1 ribbon.  I definitely thing this qualifies for the Let's Do Fun and Cute Challenge over at Moxie Fab.  Don't you just want to pinch those cheeks on the turtle?  Ours are not this cute.  The inside of the card says, " You Turtley ROCK!"  I'm also entering this into today's TCP 118 challenge to use twine.

Star Studded Birthdays!

Another Post!  I can't believe I could squeeze another one in this morning, but I really miss creating.  It is my therapy.  After having 5 kids run around here yesterday I needed some therapy:)   I also needed some boy cards to replace my dwindling stock.  The only thing I have time for right now is the CAS style of card.  So I used the colors from the Color Throwdown and the sketch over at Cas-tastic Wednesday as my inspiration.

To me, stars and  boy cards just go together.  This is also for Stamptacular Sunday's Challenge to use stars and stripes.  The stripes are the wood grain and on the tiny tag there are stripes.  I had to make two cards because I couldn't bear to add more scraps to my already overflowing pile.  I also have to tell you about my "goof up."  You will have to click the picture to see better though.  On the card on the left there is an SU star brad that I decided to emboss with brown EP.  I got too much on and the star image was buried underneath.  I didn't know what to do so I smooshed it onto my tinfoil to try and give it some type of impression and when I pulled it away the top layer came off and this funny brownish cream color remained.  I kind of liked it.  Crazy stuff when you experiment.  I finally realized that I need to just stop worrying about wasting my supplies because they never get used.  I make a LOT of mistakes.  If it doesn't work out I just end up tossing it.  The alternative is that my stuff just sits there.  After 16 years of papercrafting I have a lot of stuff.  So use it or lose it.  That's my motto now.

I also have a favor to ask.  I am taking on a new project and I need EASY, QUICK, kid friendly recipes.  Something that is crock pot oriented or can be made in 30 minutes or less.  Kind of Rachel Ray-ish.  If you have a recipe that you make for quick, evening meals and would be willing to share I would be so grateful.  I would love things that are somewhat healthy.  As you may know, I 'm not a cook.  On my left sidebar is a way to email me.  I promise to give credit if you include your name.  THANK YOU!

One last thing.  I feel it is my duty to inform those who have entertained the thought of joining 4H as activity that it is not something to be taken lightly.  It's one of those things that no one ever tells you.  Kind of like when I had a baby.  No one told me that my boobs would never be the same.   Why didn't someone at least WARN me?  Not that it would have changed the fact that I would have children, but  I think it would have been nice to know.  I kind of feel like 4H is the same thing.  No one told me how INVOLVED it would be.  How a simple project would be so time consuming and would turn our fun family evenings into BATTLES.  Yes!  We fight about these projects.  A simple " building a flower box" project is NOT that.  It is pages and pages of activities before you even begin to build something.  If you decide to do 4H...ONLY PICK ONE PROJECT PER CHILD THE FIRST YEAR.  I can not stress this enough.  I think I have ruined my kid's on wanting to do 4H ever again. However, now  I feel like I have done a bit of good in the world today by passing that information along.  You have been warned!

Now I'm off to run kids to appointment and then come back to the dreaded 4H booklets. SIGH!  The Battle of Gettysburg was mild in comparison to the battle going on here to get these projects done.  (I'm joking!  I would NEVER put down the efforts and bravery of that battle)  Just so you know, my kid is ready to battle me though... a few more vacation pictures.

Making Lemonade Out Of Lemons

Happy Saturday everyone!  I do have a few cards today, but I've got to say that my creativity is struggling this last week.  I literally sat at my craft table for 2 hours yesterday and didn't produce a darn thing.  I have so much on my mind that creativity has been pushed aside I guess.  We are prepping to leave for vacation on Monday and I'm trying to squeeze in a bunch of stuff before go.  I think my card making mind has already left for Gettysburg:)

I did manage a few cards this morning though. (Scroll down to bypass the chit chat:)

First, can I just tell you about my week?  I can laugh about it now, but man has it been rough.

1.Last Sat. we had an impromptu cookout with our friends.  As we were sitting around the outdoor table and chairs chatting, my chair literally fell apart with me IN it?  Me talking away and then WHAM...on the ground.

2.Next day at the 4H meeting the kids planted flowers at the church and I stood around innocently watching and....got stung by a bee.

3.  My very old dog has peed on the carpet FOUR times this week.  She does not tickle.  She pees a LAKE.
Which is the reason I still have orange carpet from the 70's.  She is about 14 now so I try not to get too angry....TRY is the key word.

4. Made Strawberry Jam yesterday while watching 3 boys play in the backyard and 3 kids play in the front yard after spending the morning shopping with kids in tow.  Accidentally read the directions wrong and put the berries and sugar together first.  Do you know what this makes?????  Strawberry syrup  not jam.  I did have one batch turn out.  What do you do with Strawberry Syrup???  Serve it with Ice Cream, Pound Cake, Bananas and Whip Cream for a Strawberry Split Parfait.  Totally made that up:D  I think it sounds good though.

5. Spent Sunday night up with my son.  He had a bellyache.  He ate too much junk food at the 4H meeting.  This is the THIRD time this has happened.  I no longer have sympathy:( grrrrr.  Ended up oversleeping and missed my son's tutoring.  I NEVER oversleep.

6.  Son woke me up in the middle of the night Wednesday to say that he was sleepwalking and opened the front door.  Whether or not this is actually true, I'm not sure.  He does sleep walk so I am a bit nervous now about him actually walking out the door while we sleep.  I think we may need to install a chain....on the front door of course!  Not on him...lol.  Well, not yet at least.

7.Watched the movie Gettysburg with the family (ok, I fell asleep, but the rest of the family watched it)  My hubby wanted the kids to know a little bit about Gettysburg before we go.  My son went up to bed and proceeded to CRY because he was so upset.  Failed parenting????  I ended up sleeping in his twin size bed with him to calm him down.  We're not getting a lot of sleep around here.


8. Dyed my eyebrows and now I look like Groucho Marx.  It's ok...a few days of hibernation is good:)

I know what you are thinking..."Why does she keep dyeing things?" ( See Hair Story Here and Here) I'm a slow learner.  What can I say.  I don't like having ghost brows.  I was really picked on as a child for my hair color.  That kind of trauma stays with you forever.  Which leads me to my last story of the long post.


 My son played his last week of baseball.  On Tuesday,  he asked me why one of the boys gets teary eyed when he strikes out.  I explained that some people are just really sensitive.  I cry at everything anymore so who am I to say.  D then talked to me about himself and his batting and how he has been using 2 other boys' bats.  He said, "Yeah, sometimes I use "so and so's "bat and sometimes I use BLANK'S bat (the boy who tears up)....The FREAK."  I was so appalled that he would call that boy a "freak."  I tore right into him and told him that was awful and mean and he better never say that again.  He was like, "What!  That's what it's called Mom.  His bat is called, "The FREAK."  It says so right on it. Don't you ever look??"

Ummmm....Oh!
Failed parenting again.  This is one of those moments where you realize that you just stink.  Yet, you are so happy to think that your child is not as awful as you just thought he was.  Happy that he is a good kid and disgusted that you thought we was THAT rotten.   ( Heavy sigh)

And so.... that has been my week.  I can not WAIT for vacation.  I'm so looking forward to spending time with my family alone.   I may have changed my mind by next week.  However, I'm choosing to look on the bright side of life.  Do you know that song?  It's a bit "catchy."  If you hear it you will sing it all day.  It's a great way to be.  As my kids' principle always says, "Make it a great day, or not, the choice is yours."  So I'm going to focus on making lemonade out of lemons or Strawberry Split Parfait out of failed strawberry jam, as the case may be.  Regardless, I won't be around next week on the old blog.  Hopefully, when I return my Mojo will be here waiting:)

An Inspiring Story about a Boy, A Man and A Family

A am so happy to share this card today that I made for a very special friend.  She was a coworker of mine and from that sprouted a very special friendship.  She introduced me to the miracle of adoption.  That the child you adopt may not be from your body, but they are meant for you. A true gift from GOD.  I had the blessing of watching her first adopted child when I lived in Michigan and I can tell you with all my heart that that little girl was like our third child.  She was an extension of our own family.   I miss her.    I recently found out that they are adopting their third child from China.  They are there getting him right now.  It's so exciting and I have been following their "Journey to Isaac" blog posts.  I made this card for them as a "Welcome" to the joys of having a boy (after a house full of pink and princesses).

Make sure you read to the end of this post for a story that may just give you goosebumps or more...

I made this for several  challenges this week.  I love the fact that Isaac is coming from China into the USA so I could use Red, White and Blue.  This isn't your typical "Welcome Baby" card.  Isaac is almost one so I thought this image from the Pure Innocence Collection was a bit more fitting than a baby.  He doesn't really look Asian though.  I need more Copic colors:)  I wanted to point out that I colored the bottom layer of that star with Copics.  That way I was sure it matched my project.  Red card stock seemed too harsh.  Also, the layer underneath is a Labels 11 nestie and I had to cut it in half to have it span the length I needed.  One more thing.  My ribbon was folded in half and sewn because it was just toooooo wide for my liking.

I used Jen's SFYTT.  This also fits the challenge at JUGS and The Shabby Tea Room to use Red, White, Blue and optional Kraft.  Over at Stamptacular Sunday Challenge you were to include a tree.  CCEE Stampers is Nursery Rhymes...this is Little Boy Blue:)  The Crazy Challenge is 'something NEW.'

So onto the story...

I always tell my kids that each person is put on this Earth for a reason.  That no one is better than anyone else.  Each person has their own gift to share on this world.  That if you take the time to look for it you can learn something from everyone.  Sometimes the lesson is that you don't ever want to BE like that person.  Still, it's something.

While reading my friend's blog posts about being in China and their travels she shared a story about the man that is assigned to their family that will eventually bring them to their new son.  His name is George and he has been taking them all around China sightseeing, translating, being their guide, etc...

HERE IS THE STORY OF GEORGE (as taken from the blog post)

Want to tell you George’s story too.  His mother had her tubes tied after 5 children (before the 1 child policy was mandatory).  Six years later she started feeling sick, doctors diagnosed her with cancer, and she had two weeks of cancer drugs. Then, the old woman sharing her hospital room told her she did not think she had cancer, but was pregnant.  Sure enough, it was true!  Doctors said the baby would not be “normal” and gave her abortion pills…two rounds.  When these were unsuccessful his mother gave up and three months later gave birth to George. Divine intervention, George called it destiny, eventually led to him helping abandoned children become part of their very own families…God knows we appreciate the irony!

 I thought this story was a perfect example of the fact that we are all important on this Earth.  What an amazing person George was to be able to see that he was a gift to this world and to make sure that other children felt that they are gifts as well.  I feel so lucky to know this family and be inspired by their unselfish acts.  I hope this story inspires you too.  The message isn't about adoption or abortion; it's about realizing that we all have something in us to give...a reason....a purpose.  In a world where everyone is trying to outdo everyone else, trying to be "The Best", thinking they are more important.....  Truth is, we all come from the same place and we all end up in the same place.  We all need each other to do the " in between."


I hope that you share this story.  I think it's full of , well, inspiration!  ( I need another word that means inspire.  I sure used it enough in this story;)

Fabulous!

So I finally got a little time to play this week.  I love having my kids home, but it really makes it difficult to do any crafting.  Today is my little boy's birthday.  YES, "little" boy.  I refuse to admit just yet that he is getting big.  Today we are hanging out at home because we are getting new windows installed.  We jokingly told him, "Happy Birthday!  You get a new window in your room for your birthday!"  He totally believed us...hee hee.   We aren't celebrating til tomorrow though.  My hubby is gone today.  So D is making a book for his tutor and I am playing with my stamps.  It's all good:)

I got some new paper that I LOVE!!!! MME Mary, Mary Quite Contrary.  Isn't it purdy???? I have to say that over at DCRU they sell a coordinating pack of Prism paper.  Is that not GENIUS!  Love it!

I used the Tuesday Trigger Sketch over at Moxie Fab for my inspiration. Lots of FABULOUS sketches to try out this week over there.  I created my own string flower in the corner.  Wish I had used a different button with a bit more pop.  Subtle can be good though.  I am entering this into several challenges.  EBTKS is about using string.  Ok, mine is twine...they're still the same I think.  In the corner I have also used the twine to add a stitch.  This week's CAS challenge 61  is to just use a sentiment. This also falls into the category of Nature over at The Pink Elephant.

And one of my favorite challenge blogs, Stamptacular Sunday Challenge is all about Sugar and Spice and Everything Nice.  This is my first time participating as a NON DT member.  Bittersweet.  I think this is a great card to give to my beautiful daughter.   She will be going to Middle School next year and I'm already trying to instill that being HER is the best person she can be.  I fully remember Middle School...UGH!  So this is going in my stash to give to her on a "rainy day."

IN With The OLD...Out With The New

Happy Stamptacular Sunday!  Wow!  I've been saying that for almost a year and today will be my last time saying it.  At least as a design team member.  It's a bit of a sad day for me.  I will miss being a part of this great group and all the fun challenges that Priscilla creates.  I'm still going to participate when I can though.

Today the challenge is to ...

Create a project that replicates"The Good Old Days". This could be something that looks vintage or includes something that just reminds you of something from many years ago when you see it.

 My project today is something that just kind of fell together.  I had these gorgeous Cosmo Cricket papers sitting on my desk looking very vintage ( gingham makes me think vintage?) and these crochet flowers that were in a MME kit that I bought on clearance.  I immediately wanted to use this shaker box template by PTI.  Shaker boxes make me think of the olden days too.

Voila!

 

Of course I had to grunge everything up with my new favorite ink...Antique Linen distress ink.
I also used a quote out of a friendship book that I got at Goodwill for my card. I did a bit of stitching and distressing to that as well.  My yellow flower was made using a scallop circle punch.  I wish I could find the tutorial on that.  It was NOT my idea, but if I can't find the tutorial I may do one myself.  It's so easy!  I layered a crochet flower on top of that and secured it with an old pearl earring that has lost it's mate:)

I love the PTI templates.  For $5 you will get a template for 3 different sized boxes plus 5 different ideas.  My one recommendation when using these templates (especially this one) is to do a "dry run."  I always find out that things come together differently than I thought or I should have put my adhesive here...etc.  After cutting all this stuff out it's a bit disheartening to ruin it because you adhesive is in the wrong place or things didn't line up correctly.  But the result is so beautiful that I will definitely be making more of these.  My daughter has asked for one.  She and my son are my biggest fans.  LOVE THEM!

A few more details about this.  I used an image that I got from one of our sponsors:  Papirloftet.  I also cut out some of the text from that same friendship book and stamped and distressed  it as well.  Nothing says vintage like lace.  I'm really loving the look of lace lately.  Try to say THAT 10 times fast:)

Going In Circles

That's an appropriate title for how my life is at times....I travel in a lot of circles.  I have personally diagnosed myself as having a bit of ADD. ( OK...honestly my hubby has hinted at it)  I start one project but get sidetracked and move to another then eventually get back to the original thing that I started.  The fortunate thing is that I LOVE circles...and dots.  Ovals are great too.  Besides.... going in circles can be fun.  Just look at what a fun card a bunch of circles produced....

  This card just  makes me really  happy.  I love the colors.  I love that it says, "I love U."  I love that polka dot ribbon.  I love the distressing, paper piercing and all those little shingled circles as a border.  I love the swiss dots embossed circles and I love that the heart in the center has tiny circles inside it.  It's stamped on CHOCOLATE chip paper and it looks like a Slow Poke candy.  Can you tell how much I miss chocolate:(????   I love chocolate and think anything brown should now just be called chocolate instead of brown.  That is a much better title.   Example: "Look at my new brown ( said in my most boring voice) handbag." Or  "Hey!  Look at my new CHOCOLATE handbag!"  Imagine a bag FULL of chocolate!

Oh Lord!  How many more days til Easter???!!!!

Anyways....back to the circles and card.  Sorry!

Good Morning!  It's another Stamptacular Sunday Challenge today.  Priscilla would like everyone to make a PROJECT for a SWEET TREAT.  

Now I have to tell you not to look too closely at this.  I have LOTS of mistakes.  I swear that I am the only person who can be ahead of schedule and yet behind.  

I made my project this week and sent it to Priscilla on Thursday.  That's when it's due.  On Friday afternoon I checked my email and found out that I had actually made my project for the NEXT WEEK'S theme.  So, I'm ahead of schedule there.  However, I had no project for this week.  Now, I'm behind.

My entire day on Friday was meetings, Vday Parties, running kids.  Then yesterday we had the morning FULL of kid activities and my hubby decided to take us into town for various things.  I truly had no time to get my project done until this morning.  So, it's late and won't be up on the SSC blog.

Just a few quick details about my project.  I used a template by Kelleigh Ratzlaff called, "Top Heavy Box."

I created my own mat template for the front, top and sides, by marking on a piece of vellum cardstock.  That way I can keep it with my file folder to just trace and cut.  That heart was leftover from my son's valentines and I created the flower using some tissue paper and a flower die by cuttlebug.  So easy.

I decided to use a CPS sketch as the starting point for my project.  I'm still working on those Valentines.  I wanted to be able to send this one to either my brother or dad.  So I hope it has more of a masculine feel to it.  I did have to add some tiny buttons though.  Guys like buttons, right?  This is a pretty self explanatory card.

Winter Blues

Well, I'm not feeling the winter blues, but that is the challenge today over at Stamptacular.  We'd like to see your creations using a winter theme and only shades of blue.  I decided to use this cute image I got at Whimsy Stamps called, " N'ice Friends."  I think this is the cutest snowman.  I had so much fun coloring him.  I decided to use some leftover pieces of sparkly felt.  These are actually scraps from my Popcorn award.  It makes me so happy to use up scraps.  I also used the sketch over at Splitcoast this week.  I really love the sketch so you will see it again in the following week.  My card is finished off with some beautiful PTI ribbon.  I love their dotted satin ribbon! Because I used ribbon, I will also be entering this into the DCRU challenge which ends today.
